“In the end, there were simply too many unlucky shots that either hit the post or went right into the goalies arms. When you’re playing teams as good as the Jackson teams, you need that kind of luck on your side,” commented Striker’s coach.
The Strikers dropped both games today in nail-biting manner 2 - 0 and 4 - 3 to the Jackson 1 and 2 teams. There were bright spots, however, and things that the coaches saw that gave them reason to cheer. With the absence of their starting keeper Caleb, the Strikers put Bradley in the goal for both games. He punted them right and left footed, made plenty of sure handed saves, but it was the tenacity and courage he showed when diving at oncoming player’s feet that got the sideline crowds clapping. On defense it appears that the Strikers have a duo that make it very difficult for opposing teams to get by. Whether it’s Duncan calmly collecting the ball and redistributing to his teammates or Morgan using her speed to chase down speedy forwards and force them to the outside where they lose effectiveness, the Strikers have a pair that can run with anyone. Also, the first hat trick of the year was registered. Ethan’s focus and attack of the goal is non-stop. He netted three quality goals in the second game to secure his spot as the teams “Goleador” (Spanish for “the goal scorer”).
While these individual efforts are always shining moments, it’s the team’s passing and hustle that the coaches get the most enthusiastic about. There were moments when three or four accurate and timely passes were made that would result in either a goal or a good shot on goal.
Next up: The Strikers travel to Jackson for their “Fall Classic” soccer tournament. It promises to every bit as exciting as the games have been so far.
